SR20 engine reliability: strengths, watch-outs, and known issues

This is a fairly reliable engine without any pronounced weak points. On forums, people regularly complain only about floating idle due to IAC valve contamination. Sometimes unstable operation is caused by MAF sensor glitches or a burnt lambda probe.

Engines of this series are equipped with a distributor ignition system that lasts a long time. However, oil may leak from under it, requiring replacement of the shaft seal. Owners also often replace high-voltage wires, and it is better to buy original ones.

Almost all engine versions have an EGR valve with vacuum or electric drive. When it gets dirty and sticks, the engine loses power and runs erratically. Many owners disable it, which often results in increased fuel consumption.

Other disadvantages include regular oil leaks from under the valve cover, low knock sensor lifespan, and not the most effective crankcase ventilation system. At high mileage, oil consumption due to worn rings and valve stem seals is common.

If you don't skimp on oil, this engine easily runs over 300-350 thousand km.

Cheap lubricant clogs channels, reducing service life, especially affecting the turbo.

Around 200-250 thousand km, the timing chain often stretches and starts rattling.

The cause of floating idle should be sought in the idle speed regulator or MAF sensor.

Strong vibrations indicate wear of the rubber-metal engine support cushions.

Leaks from the crankshaft oil seal and oil pressure sensor are common.

Under intensive use, the rocker arms may fail, leading to engine destruction.
