"Is the N62 reliable, and what should you check?"

Strength: Provides good dynamics. Common watch-out: Fuel consumption is rather high. OEM life note: not limited; often cited in practice: 250,000 km. This family appears across roughly 18 fitment bands in 2001–2010; service history, oil/cooling records, and engine-code verification matter.

Known issues

Scoring

Often reported

Catalytic converters do not tolerate poor fuel and can fail before 100,000 km, then their debris enters the combustion chambers and causes scoring on cylinder walls. This problem was especially common on early engines, slightly less on N62TU.

Oil consumption

Often reported

Originally this engine had a thermostat that only opens at 105°C, which greatly reduces the life of valve stem seals, leading to oil consumption. Another common cause is wear of the crankcase ventilation membranes.

Vanos and Valvetronic

Often reported

The timing chain is quite reliable and easily lasts 250,000 km or more, but the Double Vanos and Valvetronic systems have much lower service life. Therefore, it is very important for the owner to monitor oil quality and change intervals.

Intake manifolds

Often reported

Early engines used the DIVA variable intake system with one servo, while updated ones use DISA with two servos; both systems are equally unreliable. Note that second-generation intake manifolds are more expensive at scrapyards.

Other faults

Often reported

These engines are also known for regular oil and coolant leaks. Oil usually leaks from under the valve covers and the gasket under the alternator bracket; coolant seeps from the sealing rings of the aluminum pipe in the V-bank.
