Injectors and High-Pressure Fuel Pump

Often reported

The main problem is the direct injection system with piezo injectors. The fuel pump went through several revisions but never became truly reliable, and the injectors not only have low service life but often cause hydraulic lock.

Turbochargers

Often reported

The Mitsubishi turbos themselves last long and cause no particular issues, but their wastegate valves can wear out and start rattling before 100,000 km. Another weak point is the boost control solenoids.

Timing Chain

Often reported

The timing chain has decent life and stretches after 200,000 km. However, frequent overheating causes the plastic guides to break and fall into the oil pan. Also, with infrequent oil changes, VANOS filters clog and they start knocking.

Connecting Rod Bearing Wear

Often reported

The most serious problem is wear of the connecting rod bearings. It occurs only at high mileage and much less often than in N55 engines. However, many such cases have been described and cannot be ignored.
