Known issues

Most frequent / serious themes first; amber labels mark year gates.

Scoring and oil consumption

Often reported

This engine has an alusil coating instead of cast iron liners and is demanding on fuel quality, plus there is no external fuel filter, so scoring and oil consumption are common. Early 2.5L engines had thin piston rings that quickly stuck.

Vanos and Valvetronic

Often reported

The variable valve timing systems are sensitive to oil change intervals. Valvetronic malfunctions often lead to camshaft journal wear, and Vanos phasers wear out quickly when their valve filters become clogged.

Overheating

Often reported

This engine is very afraid of overheating and the cooling system must be monitored. High temperatures destroy gaskets and cause severe oil leaks, especially from the valve cover, oil filter housing with heat exchanger, and oil pan.

Timing chain

Often reported

The chain itself lasts quite long and is replaced around 200-250 thousand km, but the plastic guides can break and fall into the oil pan much earlier. Their fragments then clog the oil pickup, which can lead to engine failure.

Other failures

Often reported

Many problems are also caused by the short-lived CCV membrane, vacuum pump, electric water pump, ignition coils, and oil pump valve. Additionally, the plastic flaps of the DISA system can break off and fall directly into the cylinders.
