Early engines had short-lived Nikasil coating in cylinders, which is sensitive to high sulfur content in fuel and can peel off quickly. M62TU engines received Alusil blocks with silicon coating, solving the issue.
Numerous forum complaints about floating idle. Causes can include camshaft position sensors or their wiring, ignition coils, MAF sensor, or intake manifold gasket air leak.
This is a hot engine; if cooling system cleanliness is neglected, valve stem seals harden quickly, leading to oil consumption. Another cause is wear of the crankcase ventilation valve membrane.
Unlike the M60, this engine has a single-row timing chain with limited lifespan. Plastic guides wear even faster and can fail before 100,000 km. VANOS phasers often require expensive repair by 150,000 km.
Weak points include short-lived gaskets, leading to constant oil leak battles. Radiators also tend to leak and often crack in hot weather.
