Cracks in the cylinder head

Often reported

The most well-known problem of these engines is cracks in the cylinder head. It is important to keep radiators clean, monitor the condition of the fan viscous clutch, and replace the unreliable pump with a plastic impeller with an aftermarket one with a metal impeller.

Fuel pump

Often reported

Early diesel versions were equipped with a Bosch VE pump with a resistive control head, where the potentiometer tracks wore out. The M51TU replaced it with an inductive head. However, seal leaks and plunger pair wear are common to all pump versions.

Timing chain

Often reported

This engine is equipped with thick timing chains, but their service life is not very high. At around 200-250 thousand km, they can stretch and start rattling, then timing phases and injection timing are disrupted, causing strong vibrations.

Other malfunctions

Often reported

At high mileage, the crankcase ventilation usually clogs and oil consumption appears. Critical wear of the turbocharger and its wastegate is common. Injectors and the torsional vibration damper also have relatively low service life.
