Known issues

Most frequent / serious themes first; amber labels mark year gates.

Fuel system

Often reported

All versions use a reliable Bosch fuel system, but in the first generation the transistor in the VP44 injection pump ECU often burned due to overheating; in the third generation piezo injectors sensitive to fuel quality appeared.

Swirl flaps

Often reported

In the second generation M47TU, swirl flaps appeared in the intake manifold. They often broke off and fell into cylinders with fatal consequences. On M47TU2 engines the design was modernized and the problem became rarer.

Turbocharger

Often reported

Many turbo variants were used, all very reliable and durable. However, versions with a vacuum actuator had hose chafing; versions with an electronic actuator had a short-lived servo for variable geometry.

Crankshaft

Often reported

This diesel is very demanding on oil quality and especially oil level. A healthy engine does not consume oil, but if crankcase ventilation is neglected, wear of connecting rod journals and even crankshaft breakage can occur.

Other issues

Often reported

Weak points also include the not very durable crankshaft damper pulley and the crankcase ventilation system, especially on early engine versions. As with other diesels, intake clogging and EGR valve issues can cause many problems.
