M274 engine reliability: strengths, watch-outs, and known issues

In engines up to 2014, camshaft adjusters started rattling quite quickly; later the manufacturer improved the design and lifespan increased to 150-200 thousand km. Around the same mileage, the timing chain stretches and many replace them together.

Many owners of cars with this engine family complain about starting problems, the main cause being displacement of the impulse disc relative to the camshaft axis. Usually an error from the camshaft position sensor signals this.

In 2015, engines of this series were modernized and became slightly more economical, but this led to more frequent detonation with piston destruction. Also, poor fuel severely affects the direct injection piezo injectors.

It is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of the engine cooling system, as the cylinder head can warp even from a not very prolonged overheating. The problem is aggravated by the relatively low reliability of the thermostat and water pump.

Leaks regularly occur from under the valve cover due to a stuck PCV valve, as well as from under the front crankshaft seal or through the heat exchanger gasket. Due to wiring breaks, the variable displacement oil pump valve hangs, the carbon canister quickly clogs, fuel hoses often leak, and the turbo actuator sticks.
