Known issues

Most frequent / serious themes first; amber labels mark year gates.

Oil consumption

Often reported

This is a reliable and durable engine, but after 200,000 km oil consumption is not uncommon. The cause may be not only hardened valve stem seals and stuck rings, but also increased wear of valve seats and guides. The cylinder head is somewhat weak.

Head gasket failure

Often reported

The aluminum engine is very afraid of overheating and often blows the head gasket. The situation may worsen after 200,000 km due to sinking of cast iron cylinder liners in the block.

Floating idle speed

Often reported

Among minor issues, the most common is floating idle speed. If cleaning the throttle body does not help, check the EGR valve; it may be clogged.

Electrical failures

Heavier before 2006

Low reliability is characteristic of sensors, especially crankshaft/camshaft position sensors and ignition coils, both dual up to 2006 and individual after 2006.

Other drawbacks

Often reported

Oil leaks are common, usually through the oil pressure sensor. The catalytic converter and engine mounts have short service life. Also do not forget about valve adjustment every 30,000 km.
