The main problem of the diesel is the finicky Delphi Common Rail fuel system. There are many cases online where the injection pump starts producing metal shavings, clogging the entire system. Therefore, a popular service is to convert this engine to use an old Bosch VE4 pump.
Electrical glitches cause a lot of trouble for owners of cars with this diesel. Usually the cause is a short circuit in the wiring or failure of the engine ECU. We recommend contacting a specialized service that knows the weak points of this unit.
The oil pump of this engine significantly loses performance with mileage, and a drop in oil pressure reduces the lifespan of both the turbocharger and hydraulic lifters. Fortunately, it almost never leads to spun crankshaft bearings.
Other weak points include: mass air flow sensor, EGR valve, and all quick-release connections that constantly cause air leaks. Also, on Kia Carnival, the rear heater hoses often rot and the engine loses all coolant.
