G4KH engine reliability: strengths, watch-outs, and known issues

These turbo engines are very demanding on oil quality and change intervals; otherwise, the risk of bearing spin is extremely high at around 100,000 km. Service centers also blame the balance shaft unit integrated with the oil pump: rapid wear of its bearings reduces oil pressure in the engine lubrication system.

Second-generation engines were recalled for replacement of the E-CVVT phase adjuster, and our Optima GT modification was also included. The problem was often solved by installing a new cover, but in advanced cases the entire assembly had to be replaced.

First-generation engines did not have oil squirters and scoring occurs, but the most common cause of oil consumption is cylinder ovality. The aluminum block has low rigidity and warps quickly from overheating.

Weak points include the high-pressure fuel pump; when it fails, the oil level rises and the dipstick smells of gasoline. On specialized forums, it is noted that besides replacing the HPFP, a software update also helps.

As with any direct injection engine, intake valves quickly accumulate carbon deposits. The timing chain also has relatively short service life, the temperature sensor often fails, various air hoses constantly crack, and oil leaks occur through seals.
