Main complaints about Theta series engines relate to cylinder scoring caused by catalyst debris entering the combustion chambers. Usually progressive oil consumption appears immediately, followed by piston slap.
Abrasive formed during scoring spreads through the oil system, accelerating wear of both camshaft journals and oil pump gears. A drop in oil pressure often leads to crankshaft bearing cap spinning. Since late 2011, bearings with composite coating are installed, but their lifespan is even shorter.
Despite official claims that the chain is designed for the engine's entire service life, it often stretches significantly by 100-150 thousand kilometers. The main danger is that a stretched chain often jumps, and the valves bend.
