G4FA engine reliability: strengths, watch-outs, and known issues

G4FA · 2007–2017 · 17 models
"Is the G4FA reliable, and what should you check?"

Strength: Reliable and rarely bothers with minor issues. Common watch-out: Scoring due to catalyst destruction. OEM life note: not limited; often cited in practice: 200,000 km. This family appears across roughly 17 fitment bands in 2007–2017; service history, oil/cooling records, and engine-code verification matter.

Known issues

Most frequent / serious themes first; amber labels mark year gates.

Scoring

Heavier after 2010

Early years the engine had a large 'ram's horn' exhaust manifold, but around 2010 it was replaced with a small catalytic converter manifold. When the catalyst disintegrates, particles enter the cylinders and scratch the walls.

Oil consumption

Often reported

This is an aluminum engine with an open cooling jacket and thin-walled liners, which are not very rigid. Under very active use or frequent overheating, cylinders can become oval, leading to progressive oil consumption.

Low timing chain life

Often reported

For calm drivers, the timing chain lasts well, usually replaced after 200,000 km. However, if the engine is constantly revved high, life halves. Also, dirty oil often causes the hydraulic tensioner to fail and seize.

Minor failures

Often reported

Minor issues: weak tensioner causes alternator belt squeal, engine mounts have short life, oil leaks from under the valve cover are common, and idle fluctuations due to dirty throttle body or fuel injectors.
