The most known problem of these engines is cracks in the cooling jacket. If you are losing antifreeze, do not try to weld the aluminum block, look for another one.
The exhaust manifold also cracks quite often, but it can be welded. In 1994 a stronger version of the manifold appeared, and if replacing, it is better to use that one.
As with any engine with an outdated ignition system, it causes a lot of trouble. But the engine also has a trademark weak point: in winter it constantly floods the spark plugs.
According to regulations, the timing belt is replaced every 90,000 km, but most owners use non-original belts with shorter life. Good thing the valves do not bend.
On the specialized forum, owners of cars with this engine constantly complain about leaks, especially oil seeping from under the distributor or directly through its pressure sensor.
Engines from the first years of production often suffered from detonation and piston destruction. In worst cases, the connecting rod pierced the cylinder block and sometimes caused a fire. The manufacturer updated ECU calibrations and piston rings, but failures still occur. Some owners benefited from switching from 0W-20 to thicker 5W-30 oil.
