The most well-known problem of this diesel is cracking of the cylinder head. Almost all engines suffer from cracks, and frequent overheating only accelerates their appearance.
Most modifications of this engine were equipped with a Lucas fuel pump. It has many problems, the most common being leakage of the injection timing advance valve.
The entire life of a car owner with such a diesel is spent fighting air leaks. It is necessary to constantly check the integrity of all hoses and the fuel filter housing.
In this engine, something is always leaking. Oil usually seeps from under the valve cover and heat exchanger, and antifreeze from the thermostat housing. The turbo also often pushes oil.
Many problems are caused by finicky sensors and especially their weak wiring; the EGR valve often clogs or the fuel heater fails.
