Known issues

Most frequent / serious themes first; amber labels mark year gates.

Fuel pump

Often reported

This diesel is equipped with a Bosch CP4 Common Rail fuel system with piezo injectors, which does not tolerate poor diesel fuel and the injection pump fails very quickly. Then the pump starts producing chips, which spread through the system and clog the injectors.

Crankshaft pulley

Often reported

The chain timing drive is quite reliable and easily lasts up to 200,000 km, only some owners of early engines encountered a jammed hydraulic tensioner. Noise from the timing chains usually means the damped crankshaft pulley is worn.

Typical problems

Often reported

Naturally, all typical problems of modern diesels are present: the EGR valve clogs by 100,000 km and the DPF has about twice the life. Also, the glow plug relay often fails or its wiring breaks.

Other shortcomings

Often reported

On the profile forum, they often complain about the sticking of the variable geometry turbo actuator rod and failure of the boost pressure sensor, but the turbocharger itself lasts a long time. Also, on early production units, there were cases of sudden head gasket failure.
