The Bosch CP4 Common Rail fuel system with piezo injectors is quite demanding on fuel quality. Poor diesel quickly damages the high-pressure fuel pump, which immediately starts producing metal shavings that clog the entire system, including injectors.
Often before 100,000 km, a strong noise or clatter is heard from the timing drive. Sometimes stretched chains may rattle due to a weakened hydraulic tensioner, but usually it means the damped crankshaft pulley has disintegrated and needs replacement.
As with any modern diesel, the EGR valve quickly clogs with soot and seizes. The diesel particulate filter also has a limited lifespan, sometimes less than 200,000 km. Glow plugs often fail, usually not the plugs themselves but their wiring or relay.
Weak points include the boost pressure sensor and the variable geometry actuator rod. The turbocharger itself is quite reliable and lasts up to 300,000 km. On early engines, the cylinder head gasket occasionally blew at low mileage.
