On first-generation diesels, the turbocharger had a short service life, sometimes replaced at 30,000 km. On second-generation units, defective glow plugs were installed in the first year.
The Bosch fuel system is reliable; only the fuel pressure regulator often fails. Also, the return lines on injectors sometimes crack or the lift pump gives out.
The intake manifold with swirl flaps quickly clogs with carbon. It needs cleaning at least every 50,000 km, preferably together with the EGR valve.
