7AFE engine reliability: strengths, watch-outs, and known issues

Many mechanics advise against the economical Lean Burn engines. They are not only more demanding on fuel quality and use platinum spark plugs, but also suffer from torque dips at mid-range RPM that are very difficult to eliminate.

Although these engines have no characteristic failures, one is worth noting. After 100,000 km, knocking of piston pins is common, with many complaints on forums. However, before opening the engine, check the valve clearance, as they can also knock.

Also at high mileage, oil consumption often appears, up to 1 liter per 1000 km. Only a major overhaul can help, as it is usually due to stuck oil scraper rings.

Weak points of this engine include regular sensor failures. For example, increased fuel consumption is often due to a burnt lambda probe, and when the temperature sensor fails, the car usually won't start. According to forums, the absolute pressure sensor and throttle position sensor often fail.

Due to its age, these engines regularly cause minor issues: the ignition system often malfunctions, the crankshaft seal often leaks oil, and due to dirty injectors and throttle, idle speed fluctuates constantly.
