Service centers recommend avoiding economical Lean Burn series engines. They are very demanding on fuel quality, use expensive platinum spark plugs, and suffer from sudden power dips that are nearly impossible to eliminate.
A-series engines have no pronounced weak points; all issues come with age. However, one characteristic problem exists: knocking of piston pins at high mileage. First, check valve clearances, as they often cause knocking.
A burnt lambda sensor often causes a sharp increase in fuel consumption, while a failed temperature sensor prevents the engine from starting. The absolute pressure sensor and throttle position sensor frequently fail.
After 200,000 km, oil consumption often appears, up to 1 liter per 1000 km. The cause may be wear of valve stem seals and stuck piston rings.
This engine regularly causes minor issues: injectors and throttle body get dirty quickly, causing idle fluctuations, misfires or vibrations; ignition system malfunctions are common; the crankshaft seal occasionally leaks, etc.
