This is a reliable diesel and not prone to piston cracking like the 3.0-liter engine. However, problems with leaking injectors and burning of copper washers under them occur, but it is worth noting that good quality diesel significantly extends the life of the fuel system.
Modifications of this engine with a simple turbocharger are almost trouble-free, the main thing is not to turn off the engine after highway driving or equip the unit with a turbo timer. And for the turbo with variable geometry mechanism, it can seize by 150,000 km.
This engine is equipped with a complex timing system of five gears and a belt, and the manufacturer recommends replacing it every 150,000 km (if it breaks, the valves bend). However, I advise you to reduce the interval to 100,000 km and replace it together with the water pump.
As with any diesel, the intake manifold and EGR valve need periodic cleaning, and on modifications equipped with a diesel particulate filter, it is necessary to monitor its regeneration. Also, the manual recommends adjusting the valve clearance every 80,000 km.
