Fifth cylinder problem
Often reported
Many owners have encountered scoring in the fifth cylinder and oil consumption. There are two theories for their occurrence: local overheating due to design defects and a gap in the air filter through which dust enters directly into the combustion chambers.
Defective valve springs
Often reported
Engines produced in 2007-2008 were subject to a recall for free replacement of defective valve springs, which could simply break due to impurities in the metal.
Rattling camshaft adjusters
Often reported
The problem with rattling camshaft adjusters upon engine start affects all GR series engines. Often replacing only the sprockets helps, but many have to buy new adjuster units.
Other problems
Often reported
Other weak points include ignition coils and a constantly leaking water pump. AFS air-fuel ratio sensors and lambda probes are very sensitive to poor quality fuel. Early engines often had corrosion of fuel lines and leaks at cylinder head joints.
