Known issues

Most frequent / serious themes first; amber labels mark year gates.

Oil pipe rupture

Heavier before 2010

In engines before 2010, the oil supply line to the phasers had a rubber part that could burst, causing oil loss and even bearing spin. Dealers only replaced the rubber hose, but it is better to buy a complete aluminum pipe.

Phaser rattle

Heavier before 2011

Owners often encounter phaser rattle at startup, but many continue driving despite the damaged clutch and unstable operation. A common issue of GR series engines is phaser rattle at startup. Replacing sprockets helps some, but often new clutches are needed. In engines before 2011, VVTi control valves were often replaced under warranty.

Floating idle

Heavier before 2011

The throttle body gets dirty quickly, causing floating idle. Before 2011, dealers even replaced the entire throttle body. Clogged injectors and fuel filter can also cause unstable operation.

Other problems

Heavier before 2007

Weak points include unreliable ignition coils, short-lived alternator overrunning clutch, and water pump leaking before 50,000 km. In engines before 2007, leaks at cylinder head joints were common.
