A known problem of this engine is oil consumption, which can start by 50,000 km. The cause is pistons with thin oil scraper rings that quickly stick. In 2005 a new piston group appeared, with which oil consumption occurs a bit later.
In this generation of engines, the manufacturer replaced the timing belt with a single-row chain, but its lifespan turned out to be only slightly longer. The chain often stretches by 150,000 km.
The aluminum engine block often suffers from overheating, and the issue is not only in its cooling. The cause is ring sticking and oil burning in the cylinders, which warps the cast iron liners.
Due to ring sticking, oil constantly mixes with fuel, losing its properties. Additionally, an inattentive owner may drive with low oil level, causing the engine to seize.
There are plenty of minor issues: the rear engine mount does not last long, the throttle or idle air control valve often gets dirty causing idle fluctuations. There are no hydraulic lifters, so valve adjustment is needed roughly every 100,000 km.
