Early diesel engines suffered from loss of tightness at the cylinder head and block joint. A large-scale recall campaign was conducted, and many of these engines were replaced under warranty.
The most common problem is oil consumption, usually caused not by wear of oil scraper rings or valve stem seals, but by turbocharger failure.
Another weak point is the crankcase ventilation system, which quickly clogs, causing oil to enter the intake and leak from seals.
Glow plugs have a limited service life and must be replaced eventually. However, only an experienced specialist can remove them without breaking.
Apart from finicky piezo injectors, the fuel system is quite reliable. The most common failure is the fuel rail pressure regulator valve.
Rarer but still regularly encountered problems include injection pump leaks and constantly leaking injectors due to ECU malfunction.
