The most well-known problem of this diesel engine is piston destruction, and this defect affected the most common Euro 3 and Euro 4 modifications. There were a number of recall campaigns and several revisions of pistons were released.
Also on forums they often complain about leaking injectors and burning of copper washers under them, which makes the cost of some components on the secondary market quite substantial. It is worth noting that high-quality diesel greatly extends the life of the fuel system.
With regular oil changes, the turbo can easily last 250,000 km or more, but the variable geometry mechanism may start to stick by 150,000 km.
As in many diesels, you periodically need to clean the intake manifold and EGR valve, and also adjust the valve clearance; the manufacturer recommends every 80,000 km.
